Last week I completed the Paxton installation on the 90's Mustang GT. Pressuretube from charger to intake was rewelded to correct angle, some bracket mods and wiring partly redone. First impressions, except for a little whine the paxton runs smooth and quiet. Testride a shock, the car lacks power from standstill doesnt even spin the tires. After checking boost and fuelpressure over the rpmband its clear that everything is working properly. Boost is coming in at 2500rpm with about 1psi and rises to 5psi at 4500rpm. There is a noticable powergain above 3000rpms, but the engine is now definitely weaker below 2000rpm, it has to work the charger and there is no measurable boost. Maybe that wont be noticed with shorter rearend gearing, but the 2,76:1 takes its toll. Also there is less vacuum for the brakebooster when you close the throttle and the idlestepper is confused for about some moments. G-tech and AP22 will tell the realnumbers next year.

Truxmore Torino
There is a good chance to see one more NASCAR running beside the Olympia Charger at LeMans Classic in 2008. Junie Donlavey's Truxmore sponsored Torino with a Boss 429ci engine was running 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans. For latest News go to Truxmore Torino, the racecar currently undergoes restoration.

The only ...
bargain i did ever in Grat Britain was this old Santa Pod fueler chassis. It was running a blown nitro Hemi which was seperately sold long time ago. According to Jon Spoard of UK Dragracing Nostalgia its probably Pat Cuss's Ratcatcher one of the early rear engine fuelers of the late 70's. It's got the massive early Olds/Pontiac axle and nice 14x16 American Racing BearClaw wheels. It will get some refurbish for garage display, I dont think it will ever see the racetrack again.

Megasquirt
The last time I visited my friend Mexx we did testdrive his Karmann Ghia with a new engine. Waterboxer block with widened borespacing, Nikasil-cylinders and pistons from Porsche 911, rollercam and the proven selfmachined heads with SBC Valves. A premiere was the Megasquirt DIY EFI which replaced the outdated GEO Storm EFI. The Megasquirt was really amazing and worked flawless over the rpm band. Still things for refinement are coldstart, coldidle at low temperatures, but its not easy to obtain smooth operation with a radical camshaft. For further info and purchase on Megasquirt go to MegaSquirt Electronic Fuel Injection Computer by Bowling & Grippo .

Aston Martin Valvetrain
Last year we changed a piston in the AM engine but its still not in the car. Lazy! There is hope, last week we set valvetiming and valvelash. Complicated and not very service friendly, there is no adjuster at the cam gear, it must be set with an excentric gear resting between intake and exhaust cam. So you have to set everything at once, intake timing, exhaust timing, overlap and not to forget chain tension. Maybe the Aston engineers wanted to take care of the assemblyworkers so that they earn enough money from workovertime to feed their families.

You wonder
how a VW Type1 magnesium enginecase designed for 34hp can handle 400hp. It can frequently in Mexx's Agent Orange but not for ever. Sometimes it seperates by its own after 6 to 10 races for the sake of Mexx who is on edge to put a new better engine in.

Time has come
to lower the Mustangs ET over the qmile. Had the chance to buy a new Paxton Novi 1000 for reasonable money. Reason for Paxton was prize, minimum modifications, positive oiling, passenger side mount, developed from the McCulloch design, longterm history. The Novi 1000 is the smallest of the Paxtonchargers with 5-6psi boost in standard configuration, but capable of 950cfm thats up to 550hp with different drive ratios. The manufacturer promisses powergains up to 30% with 5-6psi boost levels. That should bring the Pony up to 290hp. Who knows? G-Tech and AP-22 will tell the real numbers.

Disappointing
Testing the 90 Mustang 5.0 GT over the quartermile was a little disappointing. No chance to get close to high 14's (Car&Driver times then) with wintertires and 105k miles odometer reading. Even with 2.73 rearend gearing on concrete there was wheelspin. By the way it was a good chance to figure out the measurement differences between the AP22 Performance Meter and a G-Tech Pro. Here are the timeslips for the same single run. Both devices were set for streetcar, but I forgot to adjust for same rollout so its not a perfect comparison. The Horsepower printout is not relevant, because its generated by the 1-2 gearchange. Horsepower measurements can only be done in a single gear.

Jensen Quartermile ET
The last time I tested the Jensen Interceptor was July 2004 in Hungary. The runs were performed on a dry hot summerday with about 4000lbs. testweight and new overhauled engine at Rabaring. Best result 12.7@110mph. For further details see Drag Times.

Braking the 5.0 GT
During a trip to Switzerland and Italy I had lot of possibilities to test the refurbished Mustang GT brakes(see Brake upgrade 5.0 GT) whilst driving over several mountain passes. On streetdriving the Hawk pads give better brake feel and less pedal effort. You can feel that the pads have a higher friction coefficient and I am quite sure that the stopping distances are reduced. But driving mountain passes reveal new problems with this setup, due to the higher friction cefficient and better braking the heat builds up much more quickly, the frontbrakes start to smell and smoke, disks start to warp and the brakepedal jumps. Luckily the Hawk pads can handle the heat and the car is still braking. Conclusion: Instead of the stock pads the stock frontdisks are now weakest point in the system.

Bye, Bye Mustang
The 69 Mustang fastack is sold. The owner George Komaretho switched to a Ford RS2000 for rest of season. I m a little bit sad about it, we raced the car for two seasons with success. 90% of the races were finished. Walter K. and me were responsible for concept and building. The car wasnt built strictly for winning more for reliability and as a TransAm clone of the famous George Follmer car.

Agent Orange
My friend and long time dragace companion Mexx thinks about selling his awfully fast Karmann Ghia Convertible to be in favor of building a tube chassis Karmann. Featured in various magazines and articles this is obvisiously one of if not the fastest Type 1 engined Street Karmann Ghia Convertible in Europe. Top restored and modified with uncountable hours of machining and labor. Car runs high 13's with long streetgearing (150mph topspeed) and low 11's with slicks on nitrous. Car is built with lot of Porsche parts (5sp.tranny, drive axles, cooling), lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber parts, big brakes, datalogging and various uncountable details (i.e. carbon throttle blades). Engine is a fuelinjected 2.6litres Type1 with about 250hp naturally aspirated and about 400hp on nitrous. Asking prize is 30k € obo which reflects about 50% of investment. The 455ci water tank
The Olds 455 engine project is stopped. After partly disassembling the sticking engine it appears that most of the engine parts were in a condition beyond of rebuilding. The engine was stored outdoor and we drained about one and a half gallons of water. All the parts inside heavily rusted, major engine failure at cylinder number one, bent pushrods and valves, cylinder wall completely broken down to its base. Way to much risk to repair the block with sleeves, other parts maybe reusable after further inspection. Sorry for the owner there are not much 70's Toronado engines around today.

Brake upgrade 5.0 GT
Yesterday I installed a Maximum Motorsports Brake Upgrade Package plus new disks and drums on my wifes '90 Mustang 5.0GT Convertible. We will see if it can keep the promise written in the description.
"Reduces stopping distances by 12 to 15 percent! The next best thing to Baer Claws at an affordable price. This upgrade package includes Hawk brake pads HB-263 , High Performance Rear Shoes, Stainless Steel Caliper Sleeves, and Stainless Steel Brake Hoses(3-hose kit). The complete MM brake upgrade package produced an average stopping distance of 114 ft from 60 mph, with the shortest distance at 98 ft (Mustang Monthly, Sept. 1993). For more information, also see our article in Super Ford, July 1994."

Whilst my well deserved vacation in New Zealand Mustang #69 was offered on Ebay. No bids but the sitemeter showed 12821 visits. Although the car was stated as racecar clone with FIA papers most of the tirekickers did comment "...thats no real Boss, I know for sure!"
